Read aloud The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats to your students, displaying the illustrations for them to see. Encourage them to observe the adventures and emotions of the main character, Peter, as he explores the snowy landscape.
After reading, engage the students in a brief discussion about the story, asking questions like, "How did Peter feel on his snowy day?" and "What did he do on this special day?"
Then, ask them to use the weather outside or the activities they are doing inside as inspiration for their own snow day story.
As a class, create a list of words and phrases related to snowy days and winter activities. Ask the students to contribute to the list, emphasizing descriptive words that evoke the senses (e.g., cold, crisp, fluffy snow, snowball fights, hot cocoa, etc.).
Assign the Snowy Day book template and instruct students to write their own snowy day story, using the words and phrases from the brainstorming session as inspiration.
Have each student share their story and illustrations with the class.
